Governors Island wins Honor Award from ASLA-NY

West 8’s Governors Island Phase 2 is described by the jury as “an excellent example of a general design project resulting in a beautiful and functional space. The sculpted topography, the true animator of this design, emphasizes the Island’s coveted 360-degree view of the New York Harbor with an exciting variety of prospect and refuge points along the winding pathways swirled throughout. The project will have a demonstrable impact to the profession, the public, and the environment.”

From projects that examine a site’s historic and cultural influences to those that explore innovative design approaches, this year’s winning award submissions showcase the full range of the landscape architectural profession. There is a clear theme of resiliency and sustainability with the award winners that show appreciation for the long term value of landscapes – again embracing changing conditions of climate and urbanization in the urban projects to appreciation of seasonal characteristics of plants, light and weather in the residential projects. “Many of the winning entries demonstrate a masterful use of plant selection and planting design for both artistic expression and interpretation of the site, but also to create high performing landscape strategies for environmental sustainability. I am constantly impressed with the inspiring and innovative design solutions our members are producing that elevate the profession and create more awareness of the complexities of landscape architecture today and into the future,” comments Jennifer Nitzky, ASLA New York Chapter President.

The firms that won Honor awards and Merit awards will be celebrated at a Design Awards Ceremony and Reception sponsored by Victor Stanley at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place on April 6 at 6 pm. The award winning projects will be on display in an exhibit at the Center for Architecture through the month of April. For more information, go to the Chapter website.
