Drexel Square receives Editor’s pick for 2019 Best of Design Awards

Drexel Square has received an Editors Pick for the Landscape category of the Architects Newspaper’s Best of Design awards (2019).

West 8’s Drexel Square project transformed a vacant, underutilized, parcel into a dynamic mixed-use innovation hub. Serving as the gateway into University City from the Center City and 30th Street Station, Drexel Square is a key part in the Schuylkill Yards Master Plan. Positioned in front of the Bulletin Building, the team designed an over 11sq. km elliptical green lawn, custom made granite benches, outdoor furniture, lighting, and raised planter beds filled with shrubs and perennials.

The Jury included New Affiliates Co-Founder Jaffer Kolb; Selldorf Architects partner Sara Lopergolo; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill associate director Carlos Madrid III; The Architectural League of New York program director Anne Rieselbach; The Architect’s Newspaper executive editor Matt Shaw; and Oana Stănescu Studio founder Oana Stănescu. They praised projects which focused on contextual, tactical approaches over larger, bombastic ideas.
