Governors Island Team wins in Landscape Category in the Built by Women New York City Competition

Built by Women: Winners Impacting Life in New York City

With over 350 unique nominations, the distinguished jury had a rich pool from which to select 100 sites. Awards were given across nine categories, with 20 winners were recognized in Landscape category. The Governors Island Team, including West 8’s New York Principal Jamie Maslyn Larson, Senior Landscape Architect and Project Manager, Claire Agre and Senior Landscape Architect, Rachel Laszlo Tait – was the largest winning women team in the Landscape Category.

The BxW NYC jury was composed of professionals in architecture, landscape, engineering and construction, including: Deborah Berke, FAIA; Joan Blumenfeld, FAIA; Aine Brazil, PE; Fiona Cousins, PE; Cheryl McKissack Daniel; Andrea Leers, FAIA; Audrey Matlock, FAIA; and Laura Starr, ASLA. The jury was advised by Andrew Dolkart, Director of the Historic Preservation Program and Professor of Historic Preservation, Columbia University

The competition marks the beginning of activity to shine light on women and their impact on life in the city of New York for residents and tourists, alike. In the coming months, there will be a formal launch and celebration of BxW followed by an exhibit at the Center for Architecture in March to coincide with Women’s History Month. Walking and audio tours will be rolled out in 2015 as well as panel discussions and pop-ups at some of the winning sites. All submissions will be recognized via a map and listed on BWAF website.
