Kronsberg-Süd Hanover project proceeds forward

The city of Hanover is facing the challenge of rapid growth in new residential demand. Kronsberg-Süd, a location next to the site where the Hanover World Expo took place in 2000 has been identified by the municipality as one of the city’s planned expansion areas. West 8 in association with ASTOC Architects & Planners and SHP Ingenieure was commissioned in 2016 as the expert team for the urban planning of Kronsberg-Süd. Since then, the team, working closely with municipality and developer, has been taking on the task of shaping this new 53 ha. residential area with a design composed of the area’s unique location in the landscape, excellent accessibility, high energy-saving standards, exemplary rainwater management and diverse population mix.

Working with the municipality, the masterplan team has maintained engagement with the public through periodic presentations of the plan’s progress. Many of the suggestions expressed in these meetings were incorporated into the design. The resulting masterplan was submitted to the municipality and presented to the press at the end of April this year with supporting ‘Urban Design Guidelines’. Future architects for each building block shall be chosen through a competition process to commence following the implementation of these urban design guidelines. Building on the current planning stage, the municipality and the team is currently working on the draft development plan, to be presented to the political parties after the summer holidays during the upcoming City Council formal meetings.

Kronsberg-Süd represents Hanover’s largest development currently being undertaken and will provide new housing for 9,000 residents. Construction of the first main road is scheduled to start from 2018 and the project is anticipated to continue in stages until the year 2030.
