West 8 Director Edzo Bindels Presents Lecture on ”The Street as a Social Space” in Rotterdam

Edzo´s lecture will explore West 8’s perspective on the key aspects and qualities which are instrumental in the design of successful urban streetscapes. The lecture will be followed by a short response from social geographer Ivan Nio.

The lecture forms part of the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture´s Streetwise program, which explores the role and significance of the street as a social space. It examines the language and codes of the street in the widest possible sense: social, urban, architectural and functional.

The street is essential for urban life and thus the basis for the functioning of the city. It is the place where the urban design, social structures, economic networks, cultural patterns and political processes come together in a unique way and continuously influence each other.

Streetwise investigates a spatial theme that is both universal and time-bound, an international phenomenon, but also a very topical issue in the revitalization of the city of Rotterdam.

The lecture, ‘The Street as a Social Space’ will take place at 19.30 on Tuesday the 20th of May, 2014 in Rotterdam’s de Unie and is open to the public
