More than 25,000 saplings to be planted in Máximapark this spring

To complete the last section of Máximapark, 25,000 saplings of oak, beech, lime and cherry trees will be planted this spring at the southern end of the Binnenhof. Now the necessary drainage is in place, and the soil is well prepared, the planting of the final section of beech forest and other tree stock can commence. This work builds on the new paths and renovated bridges that have been installed by the park management bureau over the last few months, and will complete the Binnenhof, which has been under development for almost ten years.

The evolution of the Binnenhof, has been a labour of love, and is the product of ongoing community engagement. Since the park’s inception, residents of Vleuten-De Meern and Leidsche Rijn have worked in close collaboration with the District Service Center, Utrecht City Enterprises and the Municipality of Utrecht. They have all played an important role in the creation of ‘their’ park. Not only by giving input on the park design but also by organizing and participating physically in the building and planting of the park.

Last year alone, more than 10,000 flowering bulbs were planted by volunteers, an act which enrich the park with vibrant spring colour for years to come. As for the last piece of park to be completed “let’s build it together!” says Bart van Aller, planting coordinator and representative from the Vrienden van Máximapark (Friends of the Máximapark). Mr Aller will be coordinating the effort in conjunction with Peter Mocking and Piet van Kats.

Call for Volunteers to help Plant the Binnenhof
The Vrienden van Máximapark together with the Municipality of Utrecht have outlined the planting required for this last part of the park. On every Saturday in February and March, volunteers under professional guidance will be able to help plant the new trees. Everyone is welcome to join, and interested persons can find more information on the official website of Máximapark. Including the planting schedule and sign up list for preferred dates (via coordinator Peter Mocking.)

This event is a great chance to make Máximapark ‘yours’ too. Full catering will be provided for all volunteers who join the event.
