Softening industrial remnant spaces to create high-quality public areas.
Vaartkom area features diverse scales and remnants of its industrial past. Aiming to create a balanced human-centric district, public space redesign is essential for improved connectivity. The area is shifting from an industrial to an esplanade wharf, creating a lounge with terraces and greenery. The square plays a important role as a transit space. The presence of the viaduct, the busplatforms and the entrance ways to the public parking define the public space. With the redesign necessary hardsscape surfaces are collected under the viaduct and the remaining area is transformed into a more tranquil green space.
