The introduction of new activities as well as the creation of public spaces provided this former industrial site with a clear identity. At strategic locations, ‘bridges’ were placed connecting Kanaaleiland with the city centre. This in turn generated a grid of easily navigable foot and cycle paths. One bridge connects the low Kanaaleiland banks with the higher city wall. Opposite, an entrance to the Minnewaterpark and the city centre is created. A pier allows tourists to access and experience the waterfront, whereas a star-shaped bridge provides a wonderful viewpoint over the water and city centre.
