Highlighting the site’s history; creatively re-using existing structures; building lively communities.
The historic walls of the Sint-Michiel Military Fort, built in 1641, and the buildings of the old Fredrick Hendrik Barracks, built in 1913 are daylighted- becoming a crucial geometric component of the design. The barracks and military buildings will be restored and will become programmatic cornerstones in the plan.

Kazernekwartier in the Past and in the Future
A massive 3,5 x 4-meter wooden maquette, built by West 8, and temporarily put on display in the City Hall, gave residents a solid understanding of what the future phases of development hold for the area in terms of housing, recreation and living amenities.
As the architectural development of the individual sites for Phase 1 continues, West 8 is starting on the Urban Design for Phase 2 of the Kazernekwartier. For more information, visit the project website.
