Landscape design Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier

Zeeland, NL

A series of plateaus that offered the not just an intriguing perspective of graphic patterns for motorists passing over the storm surge barrier, but a bird-infested landscape that opened up the panorama across the sea.

Five years after the works on the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier was completed, West 8 designed the surrounding landscape of the Eastern Scheldt by ironing out the sand depots and covered these vast plateus with shells. These beds are the ideal rest place for the black and white coastal birds which seek to camouflage in the landscape at high tide. The fields were divided into geometrical patterns that contrast with the coastline and stressed the artificial nature of the colonies.
