Under the direction of the State of Gujurat, West 8 was tasked to preserve and enhance the existing qualities of Pirotan Island. Working in collaboration with SPECTRUM Techno Consultants and a diverse group of experts, government agencies, and stakeholders, the vision and research plan will guide the transformation of Pirotan Island into an global ecological destination for sustainable tourism and research.
With a uniquely ‘hands-off’ approach, the design balances ecological protection and unimpeded restoration with accessibility, research and visitor experience.

Perched upon a coral plateau, Pirotan Island reveals its secrets during the low tide and grants access via its expansive mudflats

Spanning 100 ha, Pirotan is known for its rich and unique marine ecosystem including mangroves, coral reefs, and a wide range of fish and bird species that are facing various environmental effects and exacerbated by climate change.

1 — 3 Repositioning the needs of the brief, the design team researched and proposed varied edge conditions and routes throughout the site, at both high and low-tides as well as varied intensities of programming.

Designing a protective sandbar that helps protect against erosion, the mangroves network island reinforce the island and become a backbone to the design.
