Connecting, honouring and educating, orienting, and amplifying the inherent drama of the Presidio itself, Crissy Field, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the City beyond.
The Presidio Parklands has been created by replacing the elevated highway that once ran through the Presidio with a below-grade roadway. This new parkland will connect the Presidio’s center to Crissy Field and provide visitors with various amenities and breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Presidio Trust, in partnership with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and National Park Service, asked five teams to develop creative concepts to inspire ideas about what could happen at the site. Enhanced by layers of program, activity and engagement, the design concept for the Presidio Parklands utilizes a flexible approach through a series of explorations and opportunities that inform a collective vision for the park.
Team West 8’s proposal is rooted in the elegance of this extraordinary setting and is intended to honour the site’s legacy as a military post and engage the surrounding communities. The vision features microcosms of Presidio experiences: a central elliptical lawn and gathering space, forests to explore, botanical gardens, wetlands, boardwalks and expansive views. These are composed to create an unrivalled destination for the Presidio that is recognizable, memorable, and full of surprises.
Elegant, powerful and respectful Team West 8’s design for the Presidio Parklands creates a destination and landscape unlike any other.
