The project is pleading for building houses with front doors at the streets within the city. The last decades the middle class has left the city to live in suburbs with their children. They abandoned the inner cities because it mainly facilitate high-rise apartments while the nearest neighborhoods lost their quality since low incomes dominate and restructuring during the 60 and 70 of the 20th century have resulted in ‘floating’ urban planning and huge traffic solutions.
The gold of the city lies in those places where it’s still a great place to live; along the green tree lined canals, lush lanes, enclosed gardens and waterside. Housing mixes easily with other programme like schools and shops. Everything is nearby: these places have a human scale and a clear address. It’s easy to tell where you live: ‘around the corner ‘. The urban fabric is continuous and connective. The Rotterdam Ground Bound Map shows how existing qualities of the city like the the remains of the 19th century neighborhoods, the harbor an the river Maas can be (re-)used, intensified and linked into new developments.
The map illustrates that 23.000 house could be built within the boundaries of the city-ring. The project resulted in a change of mind in housing policy; the trend to develop in the green meadows is broken. Rotterdam choose in the City Vision as presented in 2007 to build within the city.
