Moments of Pause: A sequence of intimate and human-scaled outdoor rooms in the heritage of New York’s classic pocket parks.

In collaboration with a multidisciplinary design team of architects, engineers, and specialists, West 8 created a sitewide strategy for pedestrian comfort that addresses the site’s exposure to the adjacent river winds and highway noise. The gardens register the staggered massing at the tower’s base, creating a sequence of human scaled spaces within the site’s distinct layout.

The design responds to city goals and challenges in open space access by providing access to adjacent public streets and future waterfront developments.
Creating a cohesive experience through evergreen planting, sculptural elements, and robust, timeless materials.

The design of the seating edges are the result of a multi-step process of drawing, modeling, and full size mock-ups to study ergonomics that balance constructability, aesthetics, and standard code. The result is an assembly of seating types that are inclusive to different users and uses. The plaza lighting is integrated into the seating edges by a restrained wash of uplight distributed at the base, creating a soft glow and expression of the granite in evening and night.

Workshops and site walks progressed the design through design stages, maintaining an efficient timeline without compromising the high ambitions for quality landscape and detailing.
