The bench concept as an outdoor meeting place continues to be a success even now, 30 years after the long linear timber seat was first constructed on the Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam.
The monumentality of the seat relates well to the scale of its environment. Its welcoming character invites people to take ownership. Ergonomically, it provides comfort and protection. The design principles have held up to the test of time and are now eagerly copied by manufacturers of street furniture. The specific form and the scale of the seat and backrest form the basis for a family of benches regularly used in other West 8 projects. They are all remarkable outdoor objects and readily relate to their varying contexts.
