Now, 30 years since the long linear timber seat was constructed on the Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam, the bench concept as an outdoor meeting place continues to be a success. The monumentality of the seat relates well to the scale of its environment. Its welcoming character invites to take ownership. Ergonomically it provides comfort and protection. The design principles have held up ‘in the test of time’ and are now eagerly copied by manufacturers of street furniture. The specific form and the scale of seat and backrest, form the basis for a family of benches, regularly used in other West 8 projects. They are all remarkable outdoor objects and readily relate to their varying contexts.
