Transformation of a small historical industrial district into a lively, mixed-use neighborhood.
The plan emphasizes creating a stronger link between water and nature- both for recreation and ecology.
The industrial location is home to the “Machinefabriek De Hollandsche Ijssel”, a historic company of dredgers that has been located in Westerwal since 1672. An important component of the plan was incorporating the factory as well as its history into the final design through public sculptures, street names, and play structures.
Linking the past and present through street types and housing typologies: taking inspiration from the surrounding factory buildings, warehouses, barracks buildings, and wooden workers’ houses.
