The first stages of West 8’s Space Conquerors Park are rapidly taking shape. West 8, with a large team of collaborators, designed the memorial park as a celebration of the landing place of Yuri Gagarin, the first human to make a journey into space. The park will also commemorate the achievements of past, present and future Russian cosmonauts.
This first phase includes the construction of a ‘108 minutes’ path, named after the exact amount of time of Gagarin’s venture into space on April 12, 1961. Furthermore, a Cedar Grove is being planted, Wall of Glory erected, containing white marble portraits of Russian cosmonauts, and the central Memorial plaza is being paved. Lastly, adjacent to the Memorial Plaza, the original Gagarin monument was renovated. Students from Saratov University helped to plant poplar trees in the park.
The first phase of the park is expected to open in 2021.
