Founding Partner, Principal
Adriaan Geuze is the founder and director of the three branches of West 8 in Rotterdam, New York and Brussels and brings more than 35 years of experience in the fields of landscape architecture, urban design and infrastructure.
Geuze is internationally acclaimed for his pioneering work in the Netherlands and abroad. Under his leadership, West 8 has realized more than two hundred projects in three decades. Many of them are the result of major international design competitions, including those for Governors Island in New York, Madrid Rio, Yongsan Park in Seoul and the waterfront of Toronto in Canada.
Geuze received numerous awards for his work, including the Dutch Prix-de-Rome, the Maaskant Prize, the Oeuvre Prize for Architecture of the Mondriaan Fund, the ARC Oeuvre Award and the ULI Netherlands Leadership Award. International prizes are the Veronica Rudge Green Prize for Urban Design (Harvard Design School) and several Honor Awards from the American Society for Landscape Architecture. In 2015, he was appointed a member of the Academy of Arts of the KNAW, an important recognition of his artistic merits. In 2022, Geuze was appointed a Professor of Landscape Architecture at Technical University Delft and the recipient of the Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award in Landscape Architecture, the preeminent award for landscape architects and the highest honour IFLA can bestow. He frequently gives lectures and teaches at institutions worldwide.
West 8's winning design for the Leidsche Rijn park is based on creating three 'edges' that shield the park from its suburban surroundings.
Miami Beach SoundScape
The Lincoln Park site is a small - slightly larger than 1 hectare in size - urban site located at Washington Avenue and 17th Street in South Florida that strives to establish a new precedent for parks in the City of Miami Beach.
The master plan for the reclaimed riverbanks and the new urban area of Madrid RIO was designed and created by Burgos & Garrido, Porras La Casta, Rubio & A-Sala and West 8.
West Kowloon Cultural District Park
With several facilities to host and produce world-class exhibitions, performances and arts and cultural events, West 8’s design for the West Kowloon Cultural District Park provided 23 hectares of public open space including a park, a green avenue and a waterfront promenade.
Houston Botanic Garden - Phase 1
The first phase of what will ultimately be a 132 acre design, The Houston Botanic Garden has transformed the island, and the adjacent south gardens on the opposite side of the Sims Channel, into an oasis of learning, discovery and horticultural beauty.
Governors Island: Park and Public Space
Developed from the 2007 international design competition winning entry and the 2010 Park and Public Spaces Masterplan, Phase 1 of Governors Island, which opened in 2014, creates 30 acres of new park and public spaces and adds key visitor amenities to the historic North Island.
