Working together in a collaborative team led by Prior + Partners and ARUP, West 8, together with Alison Brooks Architects, Turner Works and Marc Koehler Architects have been selected as the winners for the Thamesmead Waterfront Vision and Strategic Masterplan in London.
The total masterplan will deliver thousands of new homes, commercial and leisure spaces, new green and blue landscaping and river frontage for the 100ha site on the south bank of the river Thames. Focusing on undeveloped land adjacent to the existing Thamesmead community, the development will be a key factor in how the Thamesmead Waterfront area will continue to evolve over the future decades.
The full team, including The Place Bureau; JA Projects; Schulze+Grassov; Soundings; Sage Culture; WorkWild; and London Wildlife Trust is a diverse and engaged range of placemaking specialists.
The Joint Venture partnership of Peabody and Lendlease has already developed a set of guiding principles and an emerging shared vision for the site for the selected masterplanners. As lead landscape designers, West 8 will nurture and develop the principle of ‘natural living’ to use and enhance the existing landscape to create a unique natural destination for Thamesmead, London and the South-East, providing a place where people can unwind and find space to enjoy the natural world.
In total, the Thamesmead Waterfront Vision and Strategic Masterplan competition received more than 70 submissions, and encouraged collaborations with ‘smaller, diverse practices and those with local knowledge’ to apply. The initial shortlist of five teams was announced by the Joint Venture partnership in February of this year.
