West 8 has been selected to design Campusplein, a new square at the heart of Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP). The design will embody the park’s ambition of becoming a more ecological, biodiverse and sustainable campus.
LBSP is the largest life sciences campus in the Netherlands, hosting over a hundred dedicated medical life sciences companies and several top-tier research institutes, including Leiden University.
West 8 has envisioned a Campusplein which will intensify the existing landscape, offer a diverse range of flexible uses, and further enrich the LBSP’s character of scientific innovation. The square will function as an intimate and contemplative central space for thousands of users: students and employees of Leiden University, business employees, community residents and visitors to unwind. LBSP explains, “West 8’s vision provides the new square with a clear identity and a green character”.
From the start of the design process, West 8 will work together with an ecologist to improve the biodiversity in the area. The design, which features a central pond, will tie in with sustainability measures for the environment that have already been launched by LBSP, such as the LBSP Biodiversity Plan and the BREEAM Area Development Sustainability Method. The square will be realized in two phases: a large portion will be complete in 2021 and the remainder in 2023, together with the grand opening of the highly anticipated Gorlaeus Building.
