De Nieuwe Kern has been bestowed with the ARC Urban Design Award from De Architect, the leading Dutch architecture media platform.
The Nieuwe Kern is a major 131ha urban development adjacent to Amsterdam, creating 4,500 new homes and approximately 200,000m2 of social and commercial facilities.
The continuous district benefits from the qualities and characteristics of the city in the east, and the historical landscapes of the Amstel river in the west. The plan unifies the development with its rich geographical context, prioritizing the landscape and creating a large central park. This world-class quality green space serves as the foundation of a robust spatial framework.
The design proposes a clear identity to counterbalance the current fragmentation caused by existing transportation routes and public transport nodes, the adjacent Amsterdam ArenA sports complex, and variating water levels. The team works with a sound consultant to create smart solutions for the noise pollution caused by Schiphol Airport.
The ARC Award jury praised De Nieuwe Kern’s ‘thoroughness of design’ and the display of ‘craftsmanship’.
