West 8 has been commissioned by the Municipality of Venlo to create a new design vision for Kazernekwartier (Kazerne Quarter) in Venlo, The Netherlands. The 22-hectare (54-acre) site, the last large piece of open space in the city, is to be developed into a lively mixed-use historical district offering new opportunities for the community to live, work and play.
Originally home to Blariacum, a Roman settlement, followed by Sint-Michiel Military Fort in 1641 and the Fredrick Hendrik Barracks in 1913, Kazernekwartier boasts a rich military-history which spans over 23 centuries. In 2013, the excavation and restoration of a part of Sint-Michiel Military Fort began. West 8 aims to preserve and celebrate the historical heritage of the unique location, improve connections between the site and the city center, and create a welcoming district to be enjoyed by the community and visitors alike.
West 8 will present their design vision to the community and the Municipality of Venlo in the summer of 2019.
