West 8 presents at Archipel in Bruges

Thursday October 5th, Archipel presents ‘Architecture as fossilized music’ within the Concert Hall season theme ‘Metamorphosis: transformations /adjustments in Bruges’. Music and Architecture!

The UNESCO-enlistment city of Bruges is undergoing a period of transformation. Now that a fresh and sparkling wind is blowing through Bruges, Archipel hopes that the architectural perception of the people of Bruges is stimulated through the architectural quality of seven ongoing projects in the city.

Architect Jan Nijs represents West 8 to join the event presenting our Revitalisation of ‘t Zand project. Working together with Snoek & Partners, West 8’s concept for ‘t Zand aims to restore the medieval urban structure of Bruges and eliminate the dated cross section at West Bruges that separated the city in the 20th century. More importantly, the project demonstrates how an outdated roof above a underground parking can be redesigned into a fully inviting, organised and balanced public square. The plan by West 8 + Snoeck & Partners maximizes available space for a multitude of uses. It strikes a balance between intimacy and attractiveness on one hand and the demands of a premier event plaza on the other.

After the first phase, namely the restoration of historical ‘Rei’, the project ‘t Zand is currently entering another milestone, in which part of the central, multi-purpose area of the square is now being transformed. Around the Concert Hall Building and along the Western edge of the square, another 35 new trees will be planted. The construction is expected to carry on until the third season of 2018.

The lecture ‘Metamorphosis: transformations /adjustments in Bruges’ will start at 20:00 inside Concertgebouw (kamermuziekzaal) of Bruges. More information can be found at here
