West 8 to speak at the 2016 CSLA Congress

Queens Quay Revitalization Central Waterfront designed by West 8 + DTAH in joint venture is one of seven projects attributed with a honourary mention at the 2016 CSLA Awards of Excellence.

The project, which was completed in 2015 is one of the City of Toronto’s most valuable assets – see its recent write up in The Canadian Architect. The new streetscape has been re-envisioned in the spirit of the archetypal Canadian shoreline of trees, a dock, and a mirrored lake, combined with improved public transit, pedestrian and bicycle movement systems. A defining landscape, the now complete Central Waterfront serves as a linear park connecting the various precincts, WaveDecks and public spaces along the shoreline.

All winning projects will be acknowledged during the 2016 CSLA Congress in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The two day symposium, from June 23rd-25th, will examine the influences of the work of landscape architects and the effects on communities as part of the overarching theme Home: Locally Inspired.

As part of the educational sessions, West 8’s Lynnette Postuma will give a short presentation entitled “Cottage Country? Experiencing the Lakefront in Downtown Toronto” at 2pm on Saturday June 25th.

This presentation will demonstrate how the design elements of the cottage experience –water, docks, trees and rocks – are re-imagined to create a playful lakefront experience  in the new water’s edge promenade in downtown Toronto. This presentation will illustrate how these design elements have created an innovative public space, a stronger ecological edge and a new identity for the city.
